Life is like riding a bicycle - in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.  ~Albert Einstein

Many of the more dedicated cyclist have, in the past, taken exception to the above notice, but there is a similar notice for car drivers as well.  Jura has only single track roads and many of the locals in their day to day business, including the Doctor, have to travel these roads.  It is highway courtesy to allow vehicles to pass, however if you do not you are causing an obstruction, which is an offence.

It is more difficult for a motorist to pass a cyclist traveling in the same direction, therefore, cyclists are asked to stop and pull to the side in these situations.  If a cyclist is traveling in the same direction, this makes it easier, though it is advisable to pull in and allow the vehicle to pass.

All bikes are hired at the customers own risks, Jura Bike Hire is not responsible for any injuries sustained by any Hirer once the bike has been accepted at the point of hire.

Helmets are available if required.

In the case of any accidents on the Island, please contact Jura Bike Hire.  We can organise all Island resources faster than the Emergency Services, which should be contacted after Jura Bike Hire.

We have good quality mountain bikes, most with 18 gears.  The bikes have Derailleur type gears which require the rider to keep peddling in order for the gears to change.  Changing gear without peddling, or paddling backwards will result in either the chain coming off or when the rider starts to peddle again, the chain could jump either resulting in injury to the rider, or damage to the bike.

Jura is a beautiful Island and bikes enable one to come close to the wild life. But don't underestimate cycling on Jura, it is a tough ride if you head north, but well worth the effort.  Visit Corran Sands, Knockrome, Ardfarnal.  Jura Gardens are no longer open to the public.

NOTICE TO DOG OWNERS

Police forces throughout the country are reminding dog owners to take additional care when walking their pets near livestock and when allowing their dogs out unaccompanied, especially as lambing time approaches.  Crofters and farmers in Scotland have the right to destroy any dog discovered attacking their flock and police can bring charges against irresponsible dog owners who allow their animals to become involved in such an incident.

Even the most placid dogs, if not used to the country, become excited by all the smells which are new to them and sheep and deer are a great attraction to these dogs.  The dog thinks it is a game, but inflict such injuries that in most cases the sheep or deer, have to be put down.

If you love your dog, keep it under control.

Better still, keep it on a lead.
